When God Seems Unjust

WhenGodUnjustIn her pamphlet “When God Seems Unjust,Joni Eareckson Tada expounds a heartfelt and biblical response to life’s questions on suffering and unfairness. She explains why during tough times, it can feel as if God is being unjust.

In 1967, while swimming in Chesapeake Bay,  Joni misjudged the shallowness of the water while diving in, and suffered a fracture between the fourth and fifth cervical levels, causing her to become a quadriplegic (paralyzed from the shoulders down).

During her two years of rehabilitation, according to her autobiography, she experienced anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, and religious doubts. However, Joni learned to paint with a brush between her teeth, and began selling her artwork. To date, she has written over forty books, recorded several musical albums, starred in an autobiographical movie of her life, and is an advocate for disabled people.

When God Seems Unjust begins with Joni describing a horrific attack to a friend of hers named Vicky, who was left paralyzed. Vicky, like most people in her situation, struggled with the questions, Why did this happen to me? and Where was God? Joni turns to the Psalms to encourage the reader, reminding her (and us) that in those times when life seems unfair or unjust, to remember that injustice is part of living in a fallen world, to lean on God and his mercies, and to not become bitter.

Joni further expresses that as Christians, we are to approach trials with a “supernatural response,” as opposed to a “natural response.”  A supernatural response will return good for evil, and bless rather than curse. For God is sovereign, in control, and works out everything for his own ends. Joni points to the story of Job. Despite all the suffering and loss that Job experienced, and all of the unfairness he was subjected to, Job turned to the Lord for his mercy.

As Joni points out, “there is no fairness in this diseased and broken world.” The question then is this: Does God ever give us what we deserve? No, he does not, and that’s a very good thing. His justice, mercy, and grace are what ultimately spare us.

  • Justice is when we get what we do deserve, and that is hell.
  • Mercy is when we do not get what we deserve, and that is salvation.
  • Grace  is when we get what we do not deserve, and that is forgiveness, answers to prayer, a home in heaven, becoming co-heirs with Christ, service in God’s kingdom for all of eternity, and so much more.

In When God Seems Unjust, Joni Eareckson Tada provides Christians with sound advice and biblical truth, to encourage us through those times that seem unfair or unjust. Joni reflects back on her own times of suffering, but is quick to add that God never withholds good, and it’s our choice to become a victim or a victor.
